Corona Virus Update and Support

On Monday 16th March the government advised that social distancing measures should be taken by all to reduce social interaction between people in order to reduce the transmission of corona virus (COVID-19). This has meant that nearly all local social events and groups have been cancelled and vulnerable people have been advised to isolate themselves.

Today the announcement has been made that schools and nurseries will close on Friday 20th March, there will be childcare provisions put in place to ensure key workers can continue working.

There will be many people in our communities who may struggle over the next few weeks as a result of this. Many people may begin to feel lonely and isolated needing help with day to day shopping or just a supportive chat.

Let’s all work together as a community, be mindful of your family members and neighbors by offering help and support where possible.

The Town Council are here to assist people in self isolation that need support and help to get urgent supplies such as shopping or prescriptions, they also need willing volunteers who can assist with this service.

If you need assistance or are willing to offer help where you can please contact the Clerk on Clerk@leyburntowncouncil.gov.uk or 07557997285.

Small business grant funding

In the budget held on 12 March 2020, the Government announced various measures to support businesses in paying business rates as a result of the Coronavirus.

These measures are:

  • To increase the level of the retail discount to 100% (currently at 50%) for eligible retail businesses occupying a property with a rateable value of less than £51,000
  • To expand the types of properties that retail discount can be awarded on to include hospitality and leisure properties (such as museums, hotels, theatres and gyms)
  • Increase the level of pubs discount from £1,000 to £5,000 for pubs with a rateable value less than £100,000

The Government also announced funding for small businesses that are entitled to small business rate relief. For those businesses currently eligible for small business rate relief or rural rate relief, £10,000 will be provided. We are waiting on further information from the Government as to how this funding will be administered.
